Geographical Indication of goods is defined as referring to a geographical locality, region or country as being the place of origin of that product. Usually, GIs convey an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact that the product originates from a specific geographical locality, region or country.

The protection regime related to GIs varies from country to country. Some countries provide protection via sui generis systems (i.e. having specific legislations for protection of GIs) whereas countries not having sui generis systems provide protection under collective or certification marks.
